The use of the polygraph would play a vital role in the gathering of supportive evidence, in order to build an "Investigative Foundation" in such high profile cases.                                

This would also aid an investigation, where it would be prudent to establish departmental credibility at a later date, that may affect the trial and also when there is the lack of key evidence that should have been in place as applied in, (Crown - v - B J Murdoch)

To Establish, Perpetrator or Victim in-put without exclusion and, with all impartiallity. 

On using, test-string key-questions relating to Identity of the individual sitting the test and the specific case itself.

More so in the cases of missing persons where there may have been a second or third party within the crime scene, and or search footprint.

it may still play a vital role in the foundation of Such cases.

The disappearance of Peter Falconio has and will always be a mystery unless the true killer comes forth, similar to that of when Azaria Chamberlain disappeared under those horrible circumstances, however in the case of Azaria it was proven that the contemptuous NT Police were out to get Lindy with a "by hook or by crook" mentality,that is why most of the evidence that supported her claim was "lost" in transit on a flight from Ayers Rock to Darwin some days after Azarias disappearance, or fabricated evidence(like the blood stains under the dash) to create the desired outcome.One must realise that we here in the outback are left wide open to unscrupulous Law Enforcement Agencies,Political influences and Bureacrats with hidden agendas that ,in the Territory/National interest control the outcomes of most,if not all judiciary procedures.This unfortunately comes with a twin level government that controls in total, its population.Whether Murdoch is guilty or not is only known to him or the actual murderer but i suspect that as he has admitted to running illegal drugs from SA to WA via the Northern Territory the Law Enforcement Agencies of the NT would make him guilty anyway just like they made Lindy guilty.
